Is there a market for handcrafted Mad Max badges?

Postby flightsuit » Sat Sep 24, 2011 9:02 pm

A friend of mine is in her second semester of metal working classes at the local college, and the stuff she makes is amazing. I suggested to her earlier today that she might be able to make a little money if she were to user her skills to make replicas of the badges worn by the MFP. I see that Abbyshot already has such a product, and for it to be worth her while, she'd have to charge a lot more than what Abbyshot charges.

The only way I could see this making sense from a buyer's standpoint is if her badges were really high quality. Do you think anybody would want them if they cost $200 each? I know nothing about the replica badges already out there, but I figure maybe there might be a small demand if hers were made using the best metals and were one-of-a-kind.

Then again, maybe not. I'm just tossing ideas around at this point.

To be completely truthful, hell no.

I hope I don't sound like a jerk, but I'd rather be honest then let someone waste her time. $200 for a badge, no matter what the quality and/or materials, just won't sell.

Especially when the Abbyshot badge is already very well made and readily available at $40. It's hard to improve on that.

Maybe you could look into special orders for a top-of-the-line badge, but still, I don't see it happening.

No, you don't sound like a jerk. You're pretty much confirming what I already suspected. By the way, when I Googled the Abbyshot badge, I found your page where you display the Mad Max uniform you put together. That's really impressive what you accomplished!

As far as my friend goes, I've got plenty of other metalworking ideas for her to pursue.
