Night stick / police baton for MFP uniform

Postby Max Replica » Sat Jul 11, 2009 1:35 pm

I'm on the lookout for a night stick for my MFP uniform. If anyone has any tips, please let me know. I tried looking on the internet/eBay for nightstick, police baton, billy club, truncheon etc. but didn't find anything remotely close to what they used in Mad Max.
Thanks.

i dont know where you're from but over here on ebay.co.uk theres no batons clubs truncheons etc of any kind, as theyre banned. all batons are completely banned, truncheons are legal to buy and sell, but not to own, and not to make (wood-turning) also you cant sell them unless you have an antique shop (dont need any kind of license tho). ive got a wooden truncheon which i think is pretty mfp accurate in terms of dimensions and shape, it was an ex british military police truncheon, got it from an army surplus. id sell it you but i think the feds would do me again if i tried to export it. can upload photos if youd like to see it

Sure, I'd love to see it. please upload a photo.

Here in the states we don't have quite as many restrictions - It would be hard to restrict such things considering baseball is "America's pastime" and every good American family has a baseball bat in the house. Not to mention that millions of moms and dads drive around with baseball bats in their cars (for the kids of course...) I have heard though that if you get pulled over by the cops and have a baseball bat in your car it's a good thing if you have a baseball glove and a ball somewhere near it.

Given that they aren't really restricted here you'd think I'd have an easier time finding them online. Well, the modern ones are easy to find, just not the old fashioned wood ones.

I bet you wouldn't have any trouble selling an old truncheon to me. I'd think that the UK post would check your incoming mail more than your outgoing, and the feds here don't care about people importing that sort of thing. Here's an idea, you could always dress it up as something else. Some kind of holiday decoration or something (maybe put red and white candy stripes on it for christmas?)

A quick search turned up these:

http://www.oldemasterbatons.com/

http://www.policeguide.com/Photo_Galler ... atons.html

http://maine.craigslist.org/clt/1234882823.html

The first two might make one for you. I couldn't find any prices so you'll have to call/contact yourself. The third one is a listing on Craig's List, in the northeast USA I believe. I'm sure you could contact him and offer him $$$ to ship it wherever you like.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Humvee. Yup those were some of the same things I found. I emailed that person in Maine last week so I'm assuming they no longer have it or aren't interested. And those places that make really fancy presentation pieces probably would not waste their time with something simple like I'm looking for (at least not for a price I'd want to pay)

BUT... I may have just found a place on the internet that still sells the type needed for an MFP outfit. And at less than $10. Stay tuned...

Definitely a very cool old piece. And the handle looks similar to the type Max uses, otherwise looks way too short though.
Thanks for posting the pic.

I've ordered one from an online retailer that might be great, but I'm waiting to see if they really have it in stock and what it looks like in real life before posting a link here etc..

Received my night stick today and I can confirm this is a great deal for those looking to complete their MFP uniform. If someone can find a better deal online, please let us know, but until then, this will be a pretty accurate police baton for you at a great price.

Go here:
http://gomed-tech.com/index.html

and do a search for night stick, or search for it in their police supplies catagory. The picture they show on the site is accurate, and the best part is that it only costs $7.99! With shipping it ended up being about $17 total to California.

I just popped in the Mad Max DVD again and the differences between this one and the one in the movie are:
1. The handle grip isn't quite right. This one is smooth with some grooves cut into it and not raised like the one in the movie. The one Road Pig posted above has a handle much more like the one in the movie, but that's a vintage style and hard to find.
2. The thong through the handle is string and not leather, but that's easily replaced. (I'm assuming the ones in the movie are leather anyway, they're hard to see)
3. The length of this one may be an inch or two too long, but it's hard to tell. This one is 22" and goes from my hip to just below my knee. Then again, maybe I have shorter legs than Max and Goose so it's possible theirs are that same length as well (I looked at a shot in the movie where their batons start around the hip and stop right around the knee)

So lets recap (just for my own sense of self-importance) - So far I have found good cheap sources on the internet for: leather pants with no back pockets, mfp gloves, sam brown belts (in the U.S.), the multi-tool knife, the sunglasses (even though they're now no longer available), the MFP garrison belt and now the night stick. Just doing my part to increase spending and stimulate the economy. You're welcome America.

Thanks for researching all of that and doing all the legwork. I know I'd appreciate it if I was making a costume. Have you passed any of that info on to Karol (madmaxcostumes)?

Yup, Karol is fully in the loop. We both live in Southern California and regularly work together on various Mad Max projects (such as the forthcoming Wasteland Radio).
