The best engine ever made?

Postby MFPmaniac » Sat Dec 27, 2008 5:43 pm

I know this might be a loaded question, especially since there are folks from different countries here. But in your opinion, what do you reckon is the best engine ever built? Multiple answers are allowed.

My choices:

1) Everyday point A to B.....Chrysler Slant Six
2) High performance useage.....Pontiac V8 (cost no object)
Small Chev V8 (tight budget)

Any other thoughts?

...sorta slow motion. he leaves the seat, goes through the windscreen, headfirst straight into the tree...right. and then, bounces back through the windscreen. by the time we got to him.. he was just sittin there trying to scream with his face ripped off......whats the matter?

Interesting subject.

Every day usage- Mopar Slant 6 and 318, 4.6L Ford V-8

High Po- For cost effectiveness, power for dollar spent, B or RB Mopar Wedge(383-440)

Tight budget- Small-block Chevy

All time top performer- 2nd Generation Hemi (426 based)

Your mileage may vary....

IMHO

1)The early mass produced ford flatheads...they illustrated 'proof of concept', changed engineers misgivings of mass production of close tolerance machining and they brought motoring to the masses!

2) Chevy Blue-flame six... every other straight six is just a development of the blue-flame

and same goes for..

3) Lotus OHC 4cyl 2 Litre, every other OHC 4 banger is just an evolution of this motor.

The old 80's 4cyl. 2L T-Spark engines of Alfa Romeo. The most reliable engine the've ever build and they are fast.
My previous car was an Alfa 75 T-Spark. One of my best cars I've ever had, 360.000Km on the clock and was still running perfectly.

Ford 289/302 Tight budget, good power, superoir factory oiling-compared to other old fords, gas milege, point A-B, 100lbs lighter than small block chevy, high reving , Lots of aftermarket support,Can turbo or supercharge easy!

4.6/5.4 Modular ford engines, All the above plus 500 ponies in the GT500 and Ford GT.....enough said!
and now here in the states a company twin turbo charged a GT500 and the car made 1100hp still using the stock bottem end! and runs 8sec quarter times at the strip!! See it in Hot Rod Mag.

Toyota's 2JZ inline 6 in the last of the supra's. Not a tight budget motor! But big power numbers from stock bottem end, and good A-B. And easy to work on. big upgrade from the cramped, oil leaking turd from the late 80's supra body.

Toyota's 22RE inline 4cyl Good all around motor, can be built up..... for a hefty price. Easy to work on!
Lots more motors out there just a small example of some good one's i thought.

Hi guys. For me it would have to be irrepressible 426 Hemi.Designed in the 50's it destroyed all in its path and then lead to Keith Black/Brad Anderson engines which hold all world records in the drag scene.Regards Scott.
