The Great Foxmobile Hunt.

Postby Foxtrot X-Ray » Tue May 06, 2008 1:42 pm

I've been on a Hunt for a New vehicle since the missus informed me that she was pregnant with our son.
Admittedly, I've been a bit picky, mostly limiting my choices to a single model, a tight year range and a specific Drivetrain.
To whit a 1998-2001 Jeep Cherokee 4X4.
(Same size and capabilities as my B4000 but more passenger room, better mileage and better aftermarket support for upgrades) :P

Anyway, I now have a line on one of these Jeeps, actually Below my price range..

And here's where the Luck comes in.. There are Variables in it's condition that I'll need to check on tonight after work, so just wish me luck that this thing IS as good a car as it appears to be...

Thanx

Hi Foxtrot,

As Im still new to this website, are you in Australia ?? If so stay away from the Jeep Cherokee and any other version of the Jeep.. The Jeep / Chrylser range are not made for our conditions constantly failing in all sections. I know you have your heart set on one, but look around there is so many better built vehicles around like the Toyota range of Landcruiser and Prado or the Nissan Patrol in the 6cyl version only for a quality 4X4.

Just my opinion, good luck in your search.

Cheers,

Brownie

Hey Foxtrot, good luck mate.

How many miles on the one you're after? I just sold mine with 200k and it easily had another 50-100 left in it. Only bit of advice I can give is if it's an automatic trans, make sure the fluid is good and clean and it doesn't have any funny shifts or anything.

Not in Australia, No. - US of A.
We have ROADS here. (Just Kidding!)

We don't have the Prado here, at least under that name, I don't think we have the Patrol, either.. (Just googled the both of 'em and neither looks familiar)
As for the Landcruiser.. That'd be sweet, but they're pretty Rare here and pretty well out of my price range.
Overkill for my needs, anyway.

The Cherokee is merely the Top of my list of possibilities.. I'm also considering some others.. Forester, Outback, Rav-4 etc..
Just need a family car that can get me through the occasional heavy snow or muddy road.

I'm a bit nervous on the trans on this one.. Can't really test drive it with the front suspension busted.
Still crashing Numbers and looking at parts cost & Stuff.

... Good choice the Cherokee is..

My JEEP Grand Cherokee Limited is a 1995 Model. It's a GOLD edition with every option except the seat heaters & sun roof. I purchased it off EBAY in Jan of 2005 and it only had 48,000 miles on it.

The Kelly Blue Book at time of purchase was $9950.00

Final EBAY auction price was $7000

Realy like the fact that it has a Mopar 318 - V/8 Small Block under the hood - The pre-Damiler/Chrysler small block that was used forever in everything from Dusters to D100 Trucks.

Have had ONE (1) single engine prob in 3 years - water pump

Have had ONE (1) single chassis prob in three years - Cracked CV boots

I do like the Foresters & Outbacks.. But they're a bit short on ground clearance (Something I've grown used to) and it's hard to find Subaru's in rebuildable condition.
Any hit in the front tends to damage the engine.

I'm primarily looking at Repairable Wrecks through my work.
Greatly reduces the price and the payments will be far smaller (About $100)
(Can't afford a second car payment of $250+ each month)
