P.S

To Tom Millan,

hope I'm not rude butting in but..

We're about 10years behind North America and 15 years behind Europe

we're just starting on StoneMastic (reinventing the wheel seems to be an Aussie past-time) and sound absorbing pavements,

Sealing is done with hot cutback (not Emulsion) which is real popular up here in the tropics of Queensland,

Hope you have a nice winter....hope to get over there at the end of the year to experience at least 1 other season!

Cheers

No problem at all. Thanx for your two cents. When you mentioned that the 'sealing' was done by hot cutback, you meant hot tar, right? Because that's what we use to fill cracks with. As far as paving is concerned, we use hot mix asphalt which is a combo of hot tar, sand and gravel.

What about flat top roofing or 'built up roofing' as its called? Do you guys use hot tar, black tar paper and gravel?

Tom

Tom,

We've only got revenue from ~12 Million taxpayers, but the country is the size of North America...so our road spending has to be spread thin...very thin!

Asphalt is only used in built up areas and laid very thin ~1 to 2 inches thick!

The rest is called 'sealed' where hot bitumen (Tar, or liquid asphalt as I heard it called) is sprayed hot and gravel rolled in...its often thinned out with kerosene (very big explosion risk and nasty fumes) ....like when you fill cracks!

Europe uses emusion (bitumen mixed with water) that has no fire hazard/fumes etc the water evaporates and leaves the sticky black stuff

We dont use "tar" (from coal) anymore because it causes cancer..so we use bitumen (from oil)

We don't use flat top roofing much!

Oh...and anywhere north of Tasmania we work all year 'round!

Overhead Cam,

Thanx for the input. I think hot tar / asphalt fumes are cool- never bothered me. Besides, its a free and legal stone!Image Image
