Holden GTS Monaro review from Sydney Morning Herald!

Postby flightsuit » Sat Feb 04, 2017 10:53 pm

I got a trial membership to a Web site called newspapers.com, which archives old newspapers. Naturally, I headed right for the Australian papers from 1973, hoping to find some advertisements or articles pertaining to our particular obsession.

And here's the first little gem I discovered, from the January 1, 1973 edition of the Sydney Morning Herald.

For easiest reading, use this direct link, and once you're on the page, mouse over the article and click to enlarge:

And here's the same image embedded in this post using BBcode. In my browser, this only displays part of the image, but if you right-click and open the image in a new tab or new browser window, you'll get the entire image, and again have the option of mousing over it and clicking to enlarge.

I think it's neat to see what they said about this car when it was new. Nice to know it was good for an honest 16-second quarter mile.

Oh boy!

This is a full-page ad from the April 11, 1979 edition of the Sydney Morning Herald. This was one day prior to the world premiere of the original "Mad Max," and it provides some insight regarding the societal context in which that film was released.

(I'm not embedding the image in this post, because I can't figure out how to have it not be huge)

Article from 4/12/79 Sydney Morning Herald, about police crackdown on dangerous drivers, especially on country roads. On the same day Mad Max was released!

awesome sources there!

flightsuit,
Could you please look up the 1973 Oil Crisis and what it did to Australia? That directly influenced the creation of Mad Max too

Hello Taipan, I'll try to get to that when I can.

Meanwhile, I must apologize, because this is getting a little off-topic here, and this probably belongs some place other than the Film Cars and Replica Cars subforum, but here's that same newspaper, on 4/12/79, the day Mad Max was released in movie theaters.

As you can see, there's a mention of Mad Max being screened at Cannes, and the article features a photo of Mel Gibson:

And from the same day, here's another full-page ad urging Australian motorists not to kill themselves and others:

And we've hit pay dirt!

From the July 7, 1979 Sydney Morning Herald, we have this scathing indictment of "Mad Max" that grudingly admits it's well-crafted, despite lacking any social value:

Nice job on finding these. And especially the first one in you start post. It features a Fiat X1/9. I'm a member of the Dutch Fiat Bertone X1/9 club for over 15 years now and I own a Bertone X1/9 as a hobby car.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

Thank you! I love those cars, and it's a shame the Bertone company didn't have better luck selling X1/9's in the US. I really liked the paint jobs and leather upholstery they added to the cars.
