Mad Max - Fury Road…finally winding down…for now!

Postby Trundlefish » Wed Jul 01, 2015 3:07 pm

It seems that this is the final week (for the most part) that Mad Max - Fury Road will be shown in the U.K. to any large degree. So basically this is the U.K.s last chance to see the latest Mad Max chapter in cinemas (until there are special one off showings/shown as part of a genre festival/shown as part of all existing four films/shown to accompany any future Mad Max films).

I've already seen Fury Road a number of times in different cinemas and I wanted my first viewing at Glasgow's newest cinema (just opened on Friday past) to be something worth remembering…so I opted for Fury Road!

I attended an 11.30 a.m. showing, only to find out that the projector was broken and the film seemed to be playing backwards!!! I was given a complimentary ticket to attend the last ever showing (which was this evening) and I was extremely surprised at how busy the screening was. Especially since F.R. has been on general release for 6 weeks or so.

Before anyone asks, it was also mentioned to me that I was the only one in attendance who had a complimentary ticket…everyone else had paid. So it wasn't busy just because it was *free*.

It seems that Fury Road has indeed shown that it has the legs to carry on and although it will no longer be shown on most screens by this time next week, it'll be extremely interesting to see just how well it will do on disc/vod/etc.

I love it when a film with so much history/baggage/ups and downs/rumours, etc, goes on to become such a highly respected and acknowledged piece of cinema history.

I remember the half page advertisement Hoyts cinemas put in Melbourne`s Herald Sun newspaper celebrating Star Wars one year mark at the box office. It had a cake
with the number one on it, surrounded by the small action figures. Will never see its like again.

I remember the tv ads they used to run "if you've seen it before...see it again!". You're right though, sadly we don't see those long theatrical runs anymore.

Ah but it'll ramp up again down the track.. There's some home media coming that should hopefully have lots for people to talk about.. It'l be a day one release for me. I was going to pre order it but figure i'll get it sooner walking into a shop on the day. :D I'd love to see MM The Wasteland come to fruition as i really have enjoyed what GM and Co gave us in FR. I was so unsure on the first viewing but i really do love this flick now.

It took forever to get to the screen and yeah it's a shame seeing it's run in the cinemas come to an end. With all the releases that have come out over the last 6 weeks it's slowly been losing screens. Too many movies coming out is our problem. The film itself is still doing better than some others movies (per screen) yet it seems to be the one on the way out both here and abroad. I'm gonna catch it one more time in the cinema before it's gone for good. It's gonna be a long wait till Sept..

Hopefully there will be some good turn outs to these last screenings. The extra $$ for the box office side of things would be good (I so want that next story) and if that can happen i guess that'll also show the studio there is still some interest in Mad Max even at the end of it's run. ;)

We should all get out and see it one last time! :D

Something interesting: Fury Road sold no more tickets in the UK than Beyond Thunderdome. This despite the fact that 1985 was near to the absolute nadir of cinema attendances here.

Attendances for both were around the 2½ million mark.

Same story in Australia btw. In the US however there was a huge difference: approx. 10 million for BT & 18 million for FR.

I've never followed box office figures in my life and then Fury Road came along..

The boy's n girl's in the states really have helped in the world wide figures. They've put in about $147 mil compared to the rest of the worlds $209. For some reason i was expecting it to be the other way around with the WW figures helping it out a bit more percentage wise than where things are at now. With things winding up for the most part (Japan only opened two weekends ago) the figures wont be growing too dramatically from here on end. There is still one region that would most likely help things a bit but Is China ever gonna get a release? It was apparently approved i'd read yet no date has been set still that i know of.

Ha, ha, ha…we were just talking about that the other day, when films used to run for months and months on end.

Although it's great to have films available for home viewing within a few months of it ending at the cinemas, I can recall when it would take a couple of years before films would ever come out on video, then even longer again until it was on telly. I supposed we probably appreciated the chance to see our favourite films all that more when we were wee.
