RW Mack

About a week ago I got an AMT Mack truck off ebay, & I've been slowwwwly trying to build it into the one from Road Warrior, the Kenworth model I already had will be donating it's wheels, rear tires, engine (with dual intakes), windsheild visor, shifter, bull bar & assorted other parts, plus it's sleeper will be cut up & made into the rear fenders, here's what I have so far:

the bullbar & wheels have been dechromed using oven cleaner & repainted, the round tank & front tires came from the Mack, the square step tank is from my parts box & i am still trying to find the (parts to make) the long tank on the other side.

since I can't find the gas tank on ebay no matter how hard I look, -it must've only came on a certian Mack model or something - I'm going to try to make my own, I've cut up the steps from the Kenworth & I'm using the other one I have as a reference, the ends, back & bottom will be flat plastic but the rest will be diamond tread, I know that's not correct but I want to save some of it in case I mess up or make it too short.

the 2 vertical bars in the middle are a little further apart than the ones in the movie but otherwise it's almost a perfect match. there was one by itself on ebay a few days ago, i think it was only going for like $5 or so.

I've been looking on ebay & as far as I can tell the 'junkyard dog', Mack R model & mine are basicly the same kit, I don't know about the green truck or the DM600 though.

I have the "Junkyard Dog", bought it when it was new.
Some time ago I tried to transform it into this, but didn't get very far. The junkyard dog is way too lumpy from the box, has a basic bullbar, instead of the heavy duty one, and has regular looking Alcoa type alloys on the front, instead of the big 6 spokes. It also has a single, small exhaust stack.

Weighing my options I decided to strip it down and just repaint it, I can do a better jopb now than when I was 13. Too bad I wasted both the Gulf and Sunoco emblems from the decal sheet.

this model (the one with the flat back nose & yellow cab) only has one air filter & 1 exhaust stack, there is a started DM600 on ebay right now that has almost correct fenders & at least one correct gas tank, I bid on it last night & was outbid earlier today.

I thought I found some spray paint that's about the right color for the cab but it always turns out too dark, any suggestions? I'm thinking about giving the cab & nose a coat of silver then go over it with the other paint.

Today I painted the outer part of the back rims silver & started trying to adapt the KW engine to the mack, I found out that the interior tub doesn't sit right on the trans as I'm used to but is held up slightly by these things on the side of the frame, the instructions say to paint the entire engine black with silver on the hoses & shit but I thought that would look dumb so I painted it blue & am going to paint the other stuff whatever color I think looks right. I got most of one fender done & cut out the back of the KW cab & glued in the back panel from the sleeper so it looks like a regular cab, aside from a couple minor cracks between the pieces I'd say it looks pretty good, plus I got one of my scratchbuilt air scoops done, using the corner of a cassette tape like Humvee driver did, I had a real (model piece) one to use as a refference & it came out pretty close.

slight update: I've been busy for the past few days but I got the gas tank & fenders about 1/2 way done, something went wrong with painting the engine & it has cracks & runs all over it, so I might have to strip it & repaint it, also i've been having an alignment problem with one of the rear axles, so I got that to deal with before I can add the air brake parts & start mocking up the fenders to make the brackets.

I know the scratch built tank looks shorter than the real one but it will even out when I put the bottom on it.

I didn't notice the screen was bent before I took the pic.

right now I'm planning on building it the way Max finds it.

the KW engine won't fit under the Mack hood & I can't build the Mack engine because I lost a piece so I haven't worked on the Mack in a couple days, I did get the other scoop done though.

EDIT: I don't need the engine part anymore, I figured it out.
