The giant crossbow from Road Warrior / MM2 has been built!

The other day I asked for screenshots of this, and now it's been made.

Our friend Marcus came by Adam's house (the production designer for this year's Wasteland Weekend) and built a giant crossbow out of scrap he found around Adam's yard. He did it in one day, and in desert temperatures as high as 105 degrees F.
Here are some pics of the build in progress. It's not 100% screen accurate, since it was made simply with available scrap, but it's pretty close. And no, it doesn't fire, but neither did the one in the movie. And since this will be part of the main entrance gates for Wasteland Weekend, we figured a working ballista might be a bit too dangerous.
Just an amazing one man build and we're really really excited to have it perched on top of our fortress wall.

Enjoy (and I think these are also the some of the first pics you guys will have seen of the fabulous, but still unfinished, Wasteland Weekend gates.)

P.S. We started off having it on the left turret like in the movie, but we moved it to the right for logistical reasons. And yes, the plan is to put a flame cannon on the other side. And that one might actually fire...

That is amazing.

That does it. I'm going to Harbor Freight to buy an arc welder right now!

The movie version uses a leaf spring and a boat winch, which seems like it might actually work (myth busters anyone?).
It's now been proven that one could be built in under a day, so as an apocalypse junk yard weapon, it might be a good one.
The only thing I can't figure out is the the release/firing mechanism they use (if they used one at all in the movie)

Yup, leaf spring and boat winch. We kind of wanted to use those for ours, but we only had less than a day to build and there really wasn't time to visit the scrap yard for parts.
If you watch the movie, you'll see that when she winds the winch, the line that is supposed to be connected isn't actually even moving. In fact, it's not even taut, it sort of waves in the breeze.

But in looking at it and at ours there was no question that it could easily be made to work if we wanted it to.

It would be the release already on the winch.

There's a clutch or brake lever in front of the grip (tiller?), but what the cable is attached to or supposed to actuate, I can't tell.

Image

You can also see what looks like an S-hook connecting the winch cable to the bow string. Again, how it's supposed to release is beyond me.

It seems like just letting the crank unwind would waste a lot of energy. Maybe the idea was, like those cheap crossbow pistols, to pull the string back past a hook to hold it and then detach the winch cable. Or maybe they didn't go past the "looks like it'll work" stage.
