Goose's song from Mad Max

Postby Leeman13 » Sat Jun 16, 2007 7:02 am

Hi everyone.

Brand new to the forum, so I apologize if this is a FAQ. I have a question regarding the first movie that has hounded me for many years, and I have never been able to find any info on any search engine or web site.

What is the song that Goose is singing in the towtruck right before Johnny the Boy makes him flip and burn? A name for the song or any lyrics would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Goose's song from Mad Max

Leeman13, I joined this forum back in 2004 searching for an answer to that very same question, been here ever since and enjoying it too but as regards the answer... as of.... (glances at wall clock... 8:55am) I'm still waiting.

There was someone who wrote on this forum saying it was an old boy scout song and that he would dig out the lyrics and post 'em... I'm still waiting but so far, no comeback.

Another said that a stunt man taught the song to Steve Bisley (The Goose) while on location and he used it in the film. That's about all the information I can recall on the subject. I hope you find out more. If you do please let us know, it's one of those splinters in my mind.... Bugging me whenever I stop and think about it.

Goose's song from Mad Max

Thanks for the info, Biker. Going by Goose's character in the film, I always thought that it might be some kind of old drinking / sailor / military song. So the boy scout answer isn't really that far from that.

It's really bothering me now, so I will continue to check the net. If I do find something, I will post it for all.

I found it!!

Well at least I think I have. Go here:

http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/song/show-songs-cubscouts.asp

Now run a word search for the word "tongue" on the page (via: edit - find on this page. in the tool bar at the top of your web browser) it's the second result.

It's sung to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies over the ocean" There's a handy little sound byte function that plays the tune as you read along. Anyway here's the first verse:

My Bonnie has tuberculosis.

My Bonnie has only one lung.

My Bonnie can cough up raw oysters,

and roll them around on her tongue.

Now I'm pretty sure the last line in that verse is what we hear Jim Goose singing as he rolls up the hill in the ute, only he sorta lulalalala's the words "roll" "around" and "tongue" as an embelishment... as ya do when you're singing on your own. I'm guessing for the purposes of the film he just hammed the whole thing with the lalalalaing, which made the search for it all the more difficult.

It's also the type of digusting song Jim Goose would find amusing to sing judging from his "Trying to scream with is face ripped off" line earlier in the film.

The rest of the lyrics you can find on the site I linked to above and are pretty funny to read. I think I may learn 'em just for a laugh.

So now the question is open to one and all. Could this be the answer? Post your opinion.

Do I get a gold star or what? Image

Goose's song from Mad Max

I will check into this. I heard an explanation of the song, that the way Goose is singing it is a traditional folk method or something. I will see if I can find ti again.

When you turn on the Trivia feature on the DVD there is text that states it is "...an old song from the Australian Bush ..." but that's all I found so far. Still looking.

LOL. Looks like the board thinks the same way I do. I spent the afternoon here going over different DVD versions of the first movie, and noticed the same comment as "Madmaxing" on the trivia track of one of them. I google searched and came up with the same site as "ydx7" for the folk music, but couldn't find the exact match because with my bad ears I really couldn't decipher any of the lyrics from the movie. And, of course, the subtitles turn off during the song.

I emailed the site owner our question and am now awaiting a response.

Biker, that's a great and really funny version of "My Bonnie lies over the ocean", but in watching the scene 9 or 10 times this afternoon, I had a hard time fitting that song into place. It just doesn't quite match. By the way, for all of my 38 years, I thought that song went "My BODY lies over the Ocean". Just goes to show, you learn something new every day.

My thanks to all the helpful board members. This is a pretty cool site.

Goose's song from Mad Max

Postby LAST V8 » Mon Jun 18, 2007 3:03 am

Here is what i know if anyone is interested.I got this years ago from one of the stuntmen from the film that did a lot of the Gooses stunts. On the night of the "rap" party or end of shoot ,Steve Bisley wrote that song down on the back of the stunty's call sheets.I have actually seen the call sheet and wrote down the song.Steve used to sing it as a kid, it go's. I used to play my old banjo and rest it on my knee, and now the strings are broken down and she's no good to me, i took it too a menders shop to see what he could do, and now the strings are all fixed up and she"s as good as new.!Obviously you have to put that twang on it but just practice it, all of a sudden it will make sense, regards Scott.
