It’s cult film meets cult jazz. It’s Mad. It’s Jazz. It’s Mad Jazz.

Stonnington Jazz is proud to premiere the epic sequel of Australian cult cinema classic Mad Max 2, re-imagined for a brave new jazz world. In a festival exclusive, the 1981 film is screened at the famous art deco Astor Theatre with a live reinterpreted score created by seminal futurist jazz outfit Shaolin Afronauts.

Directed by George Miller, Mad Max 2 transports us to an unforgiving post-apocalyptic world with a story of societal breakdown, murder and vengeance. Widely considered to be one of the greatest action movies ever made, as well as one of the greatest sequels ever made, the film won Best International Film at the Saturn Awards and became an instant cult classic.

To create a new sonic landscape for Mad Max’s future dystopia we present the Shaolin Afronauts. Drawing on a diverse array of musical and other worldly influences the South Australian outfit, has garnered a cult following in Australia and earned them praise from around world with performances across Europe and Japan.

For one night only experience Mad Max 2 reincarnated as Mad Jazz with a pulsating soundtrack that draws upon the emotional and spiritual territory of Ethiopian and avante-garde jazz and the excitement of Blaxploitation soundtracks. It’s Mad Max fuelled by the fire and spirit of legendary musical creatives Sun Ra and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Coltrane and Fela Kuti. It’s jazz amped to the Max.

It’s Mad Jazz. You’d be mad to miss it.
