Either way you spin it, it makes no sense.

Using the same actor to play an unrelated character (and credited differently as such) in a sequel makes no credible sense.
The Gyro-captain being in the same area, living the life he does, and behaving toward Max as he does, makes no credible sense.

I don't think it's trying to make sense. I don't think the studio cared a great deal about the existing material or audience. Let's face it, it's not the only thing about that movie that doesn't make sense.

I think if there's any one post to put the whole Gyro Capt./Jedediah issue to rest it is this one.

Thank you Seriz for posting up that article...

This debate has been done to death and a bit of research will yield the fact that Miller was asked this question in an interview many many yrs ago and he stated that Bruce was NOT playing the same character.
We are 100% snafu....

Ok I'll play, and open a can of worms, maybe it was the gyro captains twin brother?

Reading the book, they ARE two different people. Watching the movie, they are the same character.

It's Mel Gibson's "fault". I bet there's no line in the script that says "Max recognizes Gyro and points finger at him". Drop Mel's line and expression and they're completely different characters.
That scene was more like Mel Gibson recognizing Bruce Spence and giving him the credit, breaking the 4th wall a little in the process.

It's definitely confusing. I'd say the strongest argument against him being the same character is his teeth. The Gyro Captains teeth were rotted. Jedediah's teeth are perfectly straight and white.

There are EXCELLENT points about them being the same character.
* Same actor - I mean, what's the point? Are there no other actors. Clearly this would cause confusion (yes, I know this has been done now in all 4 movies, and it's stupid.)
* VERY UNIQUE skill set. Are you a pilot? I'm not. How many pilots do you know personally? How many pilots likely survived 10 years after the war, with mortality rates at about 95% of the population? How common is the skill of being a pilot 10 years after the war. Probably extremely rare. Yet Max encounters probably the only 2 pilots with working aircraft within probably a 2000 mile radius?!?! What are the odds, like 1 in a Billion? It's further complicated by the fact they are THE SAME ACTOR?!
* The age and appearance of the blonde kid would be consistent with the story from MM2. The Gyro Captain and blonde babe had a child. She somehow is no longer in the picture. The Feral kid was about 10 and "in time grew to lead the great northern tribe" probably when he was about 20. The Gyro captain has moved on with his son, for reasons unknown. His son is about 10 years old. Timeline really does fit in.
* Jedidiah clearly recognizes Max when Max comes to Bartertown. Unlikely in the fly-by attack from behind could he have seen enough to identify him.
* Max clearly recognizes Jedidiah in the cave, and stops and they exchange a LONG stare of recognition and Max says something like "You know how to fly," or "You have a plane" or something like that. He had NO reason to know that following the story line of MM3.
* Jedidiah does show happy recognition of Max several times in Bartertown. IF he was a different character, and not the Gyro captain, he would have either not recognized him, or been indifferent or even concerned that his victim is now in Bartertown. Yet, he smiles when he sees Max, and cheers for him in Thunderdome. Makes no sense whatsoever.

On balance, I think it was a different character, but a REALLY stupid choice to use the same actor which generated unnecessary distraction and confusion. If you're grading the movie, it loses 1/2 a star on this point alone IMO. I'd give it overall 3 out of 5 stars. It also loses a 1/2 point for the Ewoks... er... I mean band of merry teenagers ... and a full star deduction for Turner and her character flaws and the ending for an overall 3/5 stars, or a "C" grade.

Totally agree with this. MM3 was not nearly as good as it could have been. It had great potential. I fear MM4 will let us down likewise.
