Possibly, but more likely they were inspired by Scrooloose from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

Fire up the Trivia machine!

War Boys were originally called "Nekro Boys" because they were obsessed with death. That idea felt inappropriate after 9/11 so the name was changed.

The inspiration for War Boys 'chroming' ritual before going into battle comes from a 1981, Oscar nominated documentary entitled "Front Line". It follows the career of Tasmanian-born combat cameraman Neil Davis, particularly his time in South Vietnam and Cambodia in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

George Miller is quoted to say:
I saw a documentary where young [Cambodian] soldiers would go into war, they had little jaded deities -- and before they ran into battle, they put them in their mouths and just held them with little straps.

This inspired the chroming ritual.

There is a ranking system among War Boys. Lowest rank - no pigment on head. Rank above - grey head (i.e. Slit, Ace). Rank above that - Imperators with mechanical grease on head.

All War Boys are half-lives and their bodies are painted white to signify their short life span and basically being walking dead.
Imperators are full-lives. Their bodies aren't painted at all.

Thank you very much, I'll see myself out :)

Interesting, mainly because the song is called War Dance. But if this is correct:
...then they weren't supposed to be called War Boys anyway.

Bit of a stretch, but maybe ... I didn't see anyone painted blue in Fury Road though :P
Whoever they send here, we're gonna catch 'em, we're gonna cook 'em, and we're gonna eat 'em!

Yes, the War Boys went through various stages, usually with a more 90s cyberpunk look. The "Necro Boyz" (alternately written as "Nekro Boyz") seems like one of the earliest iterations and to be honest I'm glad they scrapped it.

All of McCarthy's designs were packed with details or what Miller calls 'visual noise', I'm glad they dialed it down.

Some of the enemies in the Mad Max video game are painted blue.
