I'm just gonna nudge it a little...

The Nitro Duel!

Max, Furiosa, and friends fang it back to the Citadel, tailed by the Immortan Joe's motorcade. Razor Cola, equipped to drop tyre spikes, races forward with Slit on the hood boosting the engine to get ahead of the War Rig. Nux does the same to the Rig's working engine and keeps the War Boys at bay.

When I first saw the film, I was completely wet behind the ears as far as cars go, and assumed what they were spitting into the blowers was nitrous oxide. A few viewings later, I was inspired to learn all I could about motor vehicles. Almost immediately, I discovered nitrous oxide is a gas! So what were they spritzing down the blowers? Movie magic, or maybe something real?

That's when I had the idea that those were cans of hydrogen peroxide! H2O2 solutions are a clear, nontoxic liquid, easily available to the general public. And like nitro, it has more oxygen than ambient air! Could hydrogen peroxide fill a similar function to nitrous oxide, allowing you to burn more fuel and rev the engine way up?

Hi Kami welcome to the forums , we had a discussion about this earlier on but I can't find it , there are several theories but it could have just been guzzelene as well , its a great scene !

Thanks much for the welcome!

Honestly I had been under the impression that guzzoline was just like an Aussie way to pronounce "gasoline" x.x

We actually call it " petrol " lol but I think " guzzelene " was used for the international audiences

Eh, the term is 'guzzle-ine' as a nod to the term 'gas guzzler' from the 70's and first said by The Gyro Captain in RW.

Methanol wouldve been more useful to produce horsepower and its made by distilling.

Yes exactly, Aussies don't ever say gasoline, we say petrol or fuel. Guzzelene was a just riffing on an American term.

Nitrometh, which explains the flames.

Spitting nitromethane into a gasoline engine won't do anything. The most logical is methanol/alcohol. It can be made from plants which the Citadel had. Adding methanol to a gas engine will cool the intake air which will boost horsepower especially in engines with roots blowers such as the War Rig had. They make kits for engines that do exactly that.
Look up "Snow Performance" or "alcohol injection systems". I'd post a link if I knew how.

The flames were just for a more dramatic effect.

This was one of my favorite scenes of the movie. I'm a car guy and have been around a lot of drag racing and as soon as I saw that scene I was thinking it was methanol.

That sounds plausible ... there's water injection too, but I have no idea how popular it is at the mo. Methanol sounds like a better idea on a hot air car to be honest.

I've worked around and on a lot around streetable drag cars, but never heard of methanol injection - is that a funny car / top fuel kinda thing?
