"My parents just thought it was a lot of rubbish’ Joy Smithers finally joins the Mad Max franchise

Jonathon MoranThe Courier-Mail

THIRTY six years after being forced to turn down the lead in the original, Sydney actor Joy Smithers finally joins the Mad Max franchise.

Smithers was just 15 when she was offered the role of Jesse opposite Mel Gibson’s Max in George MIller’s acclaimed 1979 dystopian action film.

The role went to Joanne Samuel when Smithers’ parents wouldn’t let her travel to Adelaide to film the then low budget movie.

“My parents said no,” Smithers recalled. “They just thought I might get run over. From a normal working class family who doesn’t have a lot to do with the entertainment industry, they just thought it was a lot of rubbish. My father apologised to me on my mother’s death bed for not assisting.”

Six years later, for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Smithers made it to the final casting but narrowly missed out. Miller did cast her alongside Nicole Kidman in 1989 telemovie Bangkok Hilton.

When the phone rang for Miller’s much anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road, Smithers thought the ship had long since sailed and that she was being offered a behind the scenes job.

“I just presumed that he must have wanted me to do acting classes with the kids,” she said. “So when they offered me a role, I couldn’t believe it.”

She added of Miller casting her, “I think he always remembered. I’ve heard he is incredibly loyal and me being in it is testament to that. I think it has all worked out perfectly.”

Smithers will be recognisable to many Australian TV lovers for her work on Home and Away, All Saints, Heartbreak High and The Flying Doctors.

She spent five months in Namibia shooting her part in Fury Road as a desert warrior alongside Megan Gale.

Her three children, aged eight, 14 and 23, travelled with her.

“I was just so happy to be on set, even the crew are all famous,” said Smithers, who shot a fight scene with British actor Tom Hardy. “It was just like watching art in motion every day.”

With Charlize Theron in the lead, Mad Max: Fury Road opens nationally on Thursday.
