For want of a more intricate explanation, because it works. Why would you go to the trouble of trying to create a new character? Change a vehicle that you know looks cool? or a costume that makes sense? When they remade Nightmare On Elm Street they didn't get rid of Freddie Krugers knife glove and striped jumper because it just looks right. You don't reboot Batman and decide to call him Owlman because you know Batman works lol. The only constraints placed on the world will be by people like you and me because we have a preconcieved notion of what and who Max is but the average movie-goer will accept whatever Max is infront of them but whether they like them or not will remain to be seen.
Because those changes would fit better with the rest of the wild and outlandishly exaggerated characters and vehicles that some suggest are the result of distortions in storytelling over time. My point of view is that it is not a remake and not really a reboot, just a continuation of the story by the director/writer that started it. Your Batman example is a good one. Burton's Batman did very well and was a resounding success. After the Penquin they started changing things to get away from that 'dark' Batman that by the end of Clooney's Batman with Batgirl, they might have done better to name him Owlman. Starting a new character in Max's environment removes any limitations imposed by the very character of Max. Max will not have a love interest (unlikely at best), that is a big minus for the studios. A spinoff series would probably be an easy sell as it has no limitations and can be as over the top as the studios want it. Heck, all you need is five teens with a reasonably strong female lead for a melodramatic ensemble and you have the perfect post-apocalyptic Twilight/Hunger Games/Harry Potter clone to capture the imaginations of all those potential middle school fans.

Originally, the film was supposed to be about a group of children living without parents in the wild. They were trying to decide what adult character would find them, when someone thought of Max. After that suggestion, it became a "Mad Max" film.

Could be. Doesn't necessarily mean they used Max to get the movie greenlighted. Also, nothing in the movie revises Max's story. Plus, the vast majority of the story is about him, not the kids.

It'll revive the franchise, because Mad Max is is already a pop icon. The groundswell from those of us from the old school will promote the interest. When Gen y and whatever this gen is get hold of it, it'll smash all records. Those of us who know we know we know. It'll be huge.

On the other hand, it could bomb if the post-production is poorly handled. But I really don't think the good Dr is anticipating that, so neither am I. 95% as close to certainty that FR will satisfy every demographic, from fangirlboys to newbies. This thing is gonna shatter conceptions. As Bubba Zanetti channeling George would say ... "I know what I'm doing". Have faith, people. This thing will deliver.

Mad Max has been out of the mainstream for 30 years. Fury Road will have to be a masterpiece with no other competition while in theaters for it to break records.

...and so it is. Years of cinematic lameass shit forgotten in the roar of a nitrous injected straight 12 engine.
