The events of this movie begin a few years from now...
Day 1 - Bryson Williams - the Nightrider - goes beserk in Sun City in the afternoon and embarks on a Big Run along Transcontinental One. The Nightrider burns out his own car, outsmarts a cop and steals his pursuit vehicle to continue the Big Run. Ten hours later, the pursuit unit codenamed March Hare begins trailing the Nightrider. The Nightrider rams March Hare, smashing up the front fender.
Day 2 - March Hare pulls up alongside the Nightrider's vehicle, and his female companion threatens them off with a rifle. A few hours later, the Nightrider's vehicle approaches sections eighteen to thirty-one of Transcon One. The pursuit unit Big Boppa - driven by Roop and Charlie - fails to intercept the Nightrider near the Anarchie Road intersection and joins the chase. Max Rockatansky intercepts the Nightrider sixty miles later, and the stolen car is destroyed when it collides with a jack-knifed road-train. Calamine, Jim Goose's wife, rings Jessie before Max gets home and tells her that a book is being run on Max's life expectancy. The odds are that Max won't survive the week. Rumours of a gang headed by the Toecutter seeking revenge on Max over the death of the Nightrider begin.
Day 3 - Max turns up an hour late for the three am patrol. There is an eight vehicle pile-up on section twenty-three of the Transcon. At the scene, Chief Macaffee warns Max that the Toecutter's gang is definitely out for revenge against him. In an attempt to bribe the top pursuit cop to stay with the Breaker Squad, Macaffee gives him a V-8 pursuit special. The Toecutter and his gang arrive at Jerusalem in the afternoon to collect the remains of the Nightrider. The gang attacks and tortures four teenagers in the town, two of whom are found near a wrecked car on the highway by Max five or six hours later. He arrests Johnny the Boy, one of the Toecutter's gang, who has also been left behind.
Day 4 - At the hospital, Max questions the two teenagers and begins to interrogate Johnny the Boy. He drives out to Jerusalem and finds another teenager who was attacked by the gang. Max charges Johnny with two counts of rape, two of causing grievous bodily harm, one of attempted murder and three counts of malicious damage. He demands and receives Johnny's discharge from the hospital and takes him back to the Main Force Headquarters.
Day 5 - Max provides the Public Prosecutor with the details necessary to ensure that the three Justices will refuse to grant Johnny the Boy bail. The witnesses to the Jerusalem assault later withdraw their testimony, despite the best efforts of the Prosecutor and his staff. Arriving at the Halls of Justice to give his evidence in the bail hearing, Max discovers that the teenagers have withdrawn their testimony, and that the charges have to be dropped. Johnny the Boy contacts the Office of the People's Observer, which demands that they proceed with the case or release him. Johnny is released, and Macaffee tells Max and the Goose that they can do whatever they like out on the roads, as long as the paperwork looks all right. On the highway, Jesse and Calamine are mooned by bikers. That night Max, Jessie, Calamine and Jim Goose celebrate the Goose's birthday.
Day 8 - Jim Goose picks up a dancer named Georgey Ramone. At night, Johnny the Boy discovers the Goose's bike parked around the back of the motel, and loosens the nut on the rear wheel.
Day 9 - Jim Goose's motorcycle comes apart on the highway. He survives the wreck and walks back to the nearest town to hire a pick-up to rescue the motorcycle. The Goose is spotted by Johnny the Boy, who enlists the aid of the Toecutter and Bubba Zanetti. Johnny drops a brake-drum off an overpass, forcing the pick-up off the road and trapping Jim Goose in the wreck. The Toecutter encourages Johnny to light the wreck. The police and the fire brigade reach the wreck, they find the brake drum in the cabin and matches dropped around the area. They take down a description of three bikes seen leaving the area. Roop and Charlie deliver the news to Max in the early evening and Max rushes to the hospital to see the Goose.
Day 10 - Max decides to quit the Breaker Squad. He confronts Macaffee in the late afternoon, and gives in his resignation. Macaffee refuses to accept the resignation, and insists that Max takes a few weeks vacation. Max calls a fellow officer, the Dark One, and arranges the use of a farm run by the Dark One's wife May Swaisey.
Day 15 - Max pulls into a garage off the highway to have a punctured tyre repaired. Jessie takes the van down to the beach to get an icecream for Sprog, and meets the Toecutter and his lieutenants. Escaping from the bikers, Cundalini attempts to attack her van with a chain and has his hand torn off. Cundalini is sent to hospital. As the Toecutter pressures a mechanic to have his motorcycle repaired, Johnny the Boy meets up with the group. Max drives hard to the north with his family. Later in the day they notice Cundalini's amputated hand trailing from the van, and turn it in to the police. The attending officer, the Dark One, treats it as lost property. The hand is never claimed. Max arrives at the farm and they settle in. The bikers begin searching for Jessie and the van. Max disconnects the fuel-line in the van and begins repairing the engine. Jessie and Sprog go down to the lake, and are followed by the bikers. Alerted by her screams, Max follows her into the forest as she runs back to the van. Jessie is cornered by the bikers, and rescued by May with a shotgun. They attempt to escape in the van, which stalls out on the road. Jessie takes Sprog and begins running down the highway, and are chased and killed by the bikers. Max returns to the house on the cliff, and gives in to depression.
Day 20 - Max discovers Sprog's mask, and devotes his energies to avenging the injuries to Jim Goose and the death of his family. He radios in his return to duty, and begins retracing the steps of his previous journey with Jessie. At the garage where he had the tyre repaired, he learns of the location of the Toecutter. Max follows the bikers along the Coast Highway, and forces them off the road. In the afternoon the Toecutter lays a trap for Max, and in the ambush his left knee is hit by a sniper round. Max pursues the Toecutter who makes a final mistake and is run over by a road train.
Day 21 - The last member of the gang - Johnny the Boy - is discovered looting a wrecked pick-up. As the sun sets, Max handcuffs Johnny to the pick-up and rigs it to explode. He leaves Johnny an escape route - cut through his ankle with a hacksaw before the petrol reaches the flame. Max drives off, and a fireball appears in the rear-view mirror.
Day 22 - Max visits the graves of his wife and daughter. (This scene appears at the beginning of Mad Max II)
Weeks Later - Max hears that Diabando survived his fall from the bridge, and nursed his broken leg for almost three days before being discovered by a group of hunters. Gangrene had set into his infected leg, and the doctors amputate it above the knee.
The events of this movie begin three years after those chronicled in Mad Max.
Day 1 - Travelling through the wasteland, Max's pursuit special begins to run low on fuel. When he slows down, he is attacked by three other vehicles - Wez on a motorcycle, a street racer and a dune buggy. Narrowly avoiding a tangle of wrecked vehicles, Max forces the road racer and dune buggy to crash near an abandoned semi-trailer. As he stops to cannibalise the vehicles for fuel, Wez screams in defiance and hatred at Max before riding off. Max finds a hurdy-gurdy on the body of the road train driver.
Day 2 - Driving along a dirt road, Max spots a kite above a dune, and discovers it attached to a stripped-down gyrocopter. He defeats a snake found on the gyrocopter, and is attacked by the gyro captain. Max overcomes the captain when he attempts to steal Max's fuel, and the captain only is only saved from death when he mentions a source of fuel nearby. Following the captain's directions, Max drives with the captain as a prisoner. Max and the gyro captain camp out on a rock overlooking a besieged compound on the plain. The heavily fortified compound contains an oil pump, a huge tanker and is defended by flame throwers on the walls. Through binoculars, Max notices Wez among the attackers, and sees the Humungus. In the afternoon Max settles down for a meal of Meat and Vegies Dinki-Di dog food, eating it with an elegant silver fork. The gyro captain and the dog fight over the empty tin.
Day 3 - In the early morning the gate of the compound opens and four vehicles emerge. The marauders quickly mobilise in pursuit. The compound vehicles head off on the four directions of the compass. One of the vehicles heads towards the escarpment where Max is holed up, and is intercepted by the marauders just below, spinning out of control. The occupants are dragged from the vehicle, and while the woman is raped the man is shot through the shoulder with a crossbow. When the last biker finishes with the woman, he shoots her with a crossbow. Max, arriving minutes too late, kills the biker with a pair of bolt cutters. He rescues the man pinned to the vehicle, making a deal for fuel from the compound. Leaving the gyro captain on the rock, Max drives slowly up to the compound gate in his car, observed by the feral kid. Max is taken inside the compound along with his car, although the rescued man later dies and Max is imprisoned. The Humungus' forces return, driving up the main gate. There are two prisoners strapped to the front of the Humungus' vehicle, and other bodies on the other cars. The Humungus addresses the compound, and offers them safe passage through the wasteland if they walk out of the compound and leave the fuel. He warns them not to attempt to take the fuel from the wasteland again. The feral kid throws his metal boomerang at Wez, but kills his pillion passenger instead. When Wez throws the boomerang back at the feral kid, the Toady attempts to catch it and loses the fingers on hand. The marauders withdraw and the people in the compound begin arguing over the offer. Just as the tide of opinion is turning against the leader, Pappagallo, Max reveals that he knows the location of a semi-trailer which can haul the tanker. Taking five gallons of diesel and a gallon of high octane, Max departs the compound on foot at night, and makes his way through the marauders' camp.
Day 4 - By dawn Max returns to his camp site on the rock, to find the gyro captain gone. Max tracks the gyro captain, still chained to a tree stump, across the clay pan and catches him again. After walking across the desert all day, they arrive at the gyrocopter. A lone marauder, who had attempted to steal the gyrocopter, is found dead along with a crushed snake. Devastated over the death of the snake, which he had trained to guard the gyrocopter, the gyro captain skins it and eats it. On the body of the marauder, Max discovers shotgun cartridges for his sawn-off - it was previously unloaded. Refuelling the gyrocopter, Max and the gyro captain fly to the abandoned semi-trailer. After a number of attempts, Max manages to start the semi and drives off, leaving the gyro captain behind. The captain follows Max in the gyro copter as he approaches the compound. The marauders see the semi, and Wez motivates them to attack. The Humungus fires a round from his .44 into the engine of the semi, but Max manages to drive it safely into the compound. Three marauders - including Wez - also make it inside. They are killed or driven off, but Pappagallo is wounded by a crossbow bolt. The marauders withdraw again, as the gyro captain lands in the compound. Pappagallo plans to move out that night, but the semi requires about a day's repair work. As the Humungus threatens the lives of the people in the compound, Max announces that he's leaving. All night, as the semi is readied, the marauders put on a show of fear to demoralise the compound. The gyro captain tried to persuade one of the women from the compound to leave with him, but she refuses. Max transfers fuel to his own vehicle, and turns down Pappagallo's offer to drive the tanker.
Day 5 - Just before dawn, Max leaves the compound in his pursuit special. Wez commandeers the Humungus' vehicle and pursues Max. Overtaking him, they force the pursuit special off the road. Max drags himself from the wreckage as the marauders arrive at the vehicle. Max's dog is shot protecting him. As a marauder is about to shoot Max the Toady opens the fuel tank on the pursuit special, detonating the booby trap and killing the marauders. Wez, watching from the hillside, returns to the camp thinking Max dead. In the compound, the gyro captain sees a rising pillar of smoke on the horizon. Max begins dragging himself through the desert, and passes out. He is rescued by the gyro captain and taken back to the compound on the gyrocopter. Despite his wounds, Max insists that he's the best person to drive the tanker, and Pappagallo grudgingly agrees. The convoy from the compound prepares to move out, with the armoured tanker at the lead. The feral kid slips aboard the tanker at the last minute. The gate opens and the vehicles move out; the gyro captain dropping petrol bombs on the marauders. The gyro captain is shot by the Humungus and wounded in the right foot. Some of the marauders enter the compound, which explodes shortly afterwards as the booby traps detonate. The school bus drives away on a different route to the rendezvous at Powder River, while the marauders follow the tanker. Gradually, they overcome the tanker's defences and kill the defenders, leaving Max and the feral kid alive in the cabin. As Pappagallo attempts to take them off in his vehicle, he is hit by a spear (although in the novelization he is not killed in the battle, and survives to take leadership of the Great Northern Tribe). The gyrocopter is finally shot down. The tanker collides head-on with the Humungus and crashes off the road. The remaining marauders run triumphantly to the tanker, only to find that it contains sand. They turn away and leave. Max pulls himself from the cabin with the feral kid, looking at the sand pouring from the tanker. The damaged gyrocopter pulls alongside, and the gyro captain and Max stare at each other. In the evening, the surviving convoy of vehicles - with the fuel hidden in the school bus - leaves the Powder River rendezvous and begins the two thousand mile journey north to the Sunshine Coast. The feral kid and the gyro captain are on board the bus; the gyro captain becomes the leader of the group. Max watches from the hillside through binoculars before driving off in the one of the marauders' vehicles.
The events of this movie begin around fifteen years after those chronicled in Mad Max 2.
